Warning: Today's blog entry will be quite serious. Please do not expect it to be as funny as usual (if it ever be). If you have side effects after reading, consult your doctor.

I love English TV programmes. I'm often astonished by the amazing quality of them, especially Planet Earth and other BBC documentary. I always wonder how they can make such wonderful programmes - everything is so good, from camera work to narrating voice. I just watched one about dolphins the other day. The cameraman obviously got so close to the dolphins I can actually see their anus! I dare not think about how much they have spent to make such wildlife documentary. But, of course, there are also awful TV shows, for example, Caught on Camera. We're now living in the 21st century and yet they're still showing us videos from 1990s.

But eventually, I always have to come back to Thai TV shows, because sometimes I do feel like hearing something funny without having to translate them into my language, and by doing so it saves me from homesick too. What I watch the most often is Ghost TV, but I only watch the parts when people come talk about their supranatural experience and when the medium comes solves people's ghostly problems. The part when they go to haunted houses I wouldn't lay my eyes on at all - it's pure annoyance. I just get irritated everytime I see female volunteers come to this ghost hunting, at midnight or so, at a deserted place with loads of plants and trees growing like jungle, wearing extremely short shorts. Here is the most idiotic conversation in my opinion:

The Boss - Right, now go sit on the wooden stairs and hang your legs between stair boards.
The girl - OH MY GOD, my legs are so cold! It's freezing cold! I'm scaaaaaaaared!

Yeah, sure. With those shorts you will still feel cold sitting in a crowded department store.

Yesterday I came across one TV show that lets people from home come on stage and sing, which I agree that it's a good idea because I believe that there are so many potential stars waiting to be discovered. At first it was just an ordinary singing contest, then there were kids, ladyboys, and foreigners singing Thai songs. What I saw yesterday were three foreigners: an old man in his 50's, a coloured dude from Cameroon, and a drop-dead gorgeous Italian lad.

But what really bored me was the way the female presenter acted towards each contestant - or maybe that was in her script. I do understand that the show wanted this to be hilarious, using this female presenter as a funny interpreter by speaking something that sounded foreign, pretending she was fluently speaking English, but that was both pathetic and silly (according to comments left on YouTube.com). Ten minutes was lost on how she kept blabbering alien language to contestants. Audience had no idea what she was saying. The contestants didn't get to say a word. She was like a parakeet with extremely annoying high-pitch voice, so high you feel like going there and slapping her till she's silent.

When she moved on to the handsome Italian guy, another ten was spent on acting shy and flirty with him. I don't deny that I was once crazy about western guys, so crazy I dreamed of blond hair when I inhaled and blue eyes when I exhaled. Wherever I went, the first thing I will do was to look for some eye-candy western "farang" boys. However, on behalf of Hot Farang Spotting Association, I suggest that such activity must be conducted within proper Thai cultures and traditions. This is indeed an art and you should learn how to enjoy watching hot western guys secretly from a distance - not drooling all over him, giggling and shouting to the world that you have found the father of your future children.

When it was the Cameroonian guy's turn, I bet he was told to finish his song by raising both arms up while the dancers, dancing close to his armpits, acting dizzy and collapsing to the floor. This was a horrible joke about stereotypes. We do have different stereotypes for people from different countries: coloured people smells, Chinese people talk loudly, and Japanese people are polite, for example. These stereotypes are not always true and it greatly depends on personal attitudes and experiences. Mocking someone about something we think is really funny about them ON TV is such a cheap idea. What would you say if a Thai person going to a foreign TV show is asked "Oh, you're from Thailand? Can you do Ping Pong Show?" Of course we will be mad at it - something that the Cameroonian contestant had all the rights to be.

Another tape was even worse. The female presenter, still going on and on with a sick joke of speaking English-sounding bullshit, finally asked one contestant "...Why you so black? Your friend not very black, why you black than them?" I can't help but feeling so sick of how idiotic this show and the presenter can get. It was as if making fun of people's skin colours was the only thing they can think of to keep the audience laughing. Imagine yourself in a foreign TV show in a foreign country where you cannot speak nor understand its language, then the presenter starts mocking your language, saying things you don't understand and hence not know what to reply, then everyone in the studio laugh their ass off, leaving you confused of what is going on. How terrible would that feel?

I'm gonna stop right here because this is the longest blog entry I have ever written. I hereby apoligise for mentioning some nationalities in my writing. I have no intention to insult or anything.
